Winsford Remembers First Published: June 29, 2014

St Mary Magdalene Church, Winsford, a picturesque village in the heart of Exmoor, opened its doors to over 300 visitors who came to view the Commemoration exhibition, “Winsford Remembers”.
During World War 1 more than 60 men left the village to serve King and Country, 12 were injured ,14 were killed and so never to return, some of these were from one family…..one village’s human contribution to The Great War.
The commemoration included mini biographies of those who served, a map of the battlefield where those men fought and in some cases lost their lives, old photographs, poems, music and a Flower Festival.

The flowers, arranged by residents of the village, were beautiful and the mini biographies were informative and thought provoking, evoking a whole range of emotions and were greatly admired by all who visited.

The weekend event culminated in The Exmoor Benefice Church Service commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the start of WW1, which was introduced by David Godsal with the service being taken by The Revd. David Weir with a Reflection by The Revd. David Coates. The service was attended by villagers and visitors alike with the Church full to overflowing. A particular poignant moment being the Benefice Choir, singing “The Call”, a piece especially written and composed by Brenda Staples for the event. The Commemoration raised substantial funds which were be donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Help for Heroes.
The organisers would like to say a big thank you to everyone who visited the event and to all of those who contributed their time and effort and family memoirs, helping to make this Commemoration such a success.
